We’ve all seen the results of too much lip filler gone wrong…duck lips. “Duck lips happen when filler is improperly placed with a needle in the central part of the lips and not in the corners where there is volume loss,” says Dr. Laurel Matthews, owner of Dr. Laurel’s PRP Bar and a board-certified aesthetic medicine practitioner. “I have perfected the technique of using the cannula method to inject filler. Four pinpoint apertures are made at the mouth corners and a microcannula is inserted to follow the patient’s normal lip curvature. No part of the needle is inserted into the colored portion of the lips. Then, a thin, consistent line of filler is laid down retrograde as the cannula is removed from the lip.

“This allows filler placement to be smooth and even without lumps. There is no bruising and minimal swelling,” she says. “And with this method, filler can be placed at the corners of the mouth where a regular needle can’t reach, thus preventing the duck look.”
